How to check if your doctor is in a Medicare Advantage network
Written by the My Plan Compass team. Last reviewed October 26, 2026, against Medicare.gov.
Look your doctor up in the plan's provider directory, then call the doctor's office and ask whether they take that exact plan, by its full name. Insurance companies sell many plans with different networks, so “we take that insurer” is not enough. Check again each fall, because networks change.
Why one check is not enough
- Directories can be wrong or out of date. A doctor may have moved, stopped seeing new patients or left the network since the listing was updated.
- Networks change during the year. Medicare says a plan can add or remove providers at any time, and a doctor can leave a plan's network at any time. The plan should make a good faith effort to give you at least 30 days' notice if a doctor you see regularly is leaving.
- One insurer, many networks. The same company's HMO and PPO can have different doctors.

HMO or PPO: what “out of network” costs you
- HMO: you generally must use doctors and hospitals in the network, except for emergency care, urgent care when you are away from home, and temporary dialysis out of the area. Outside the network, you may have to pay the full cost.
- PPO: you can also see doctors outside the network, but you will usually pay more.
How My Plan Compass checks
When you add your doctors, we look each one up in the public provider directory that the insurance company publishes, for the exact plan, not just the insurer. Each doctor gets one of three results:
- In network
- The plan's directory lists the doctor in this plan's network.
- Out of network
- The plan's directory answered, and the doctor is not in this plan's network.
- Couldn't check
- We could not reach the plan's directory, or it did not give a clear answer. This does not mean the doctor is out of network. Ask the plan or the doctor's office.
We would rather tell you we could not check than guess. Directory data has the same limits described above, so confirm with the office before you enroll. More in how we compare plans.
Questions Medicare suggests asking the plan
- How can I find out if my providers are in the plan's network?
- How much do I pay for services in network?
- How much do I pay for services out of network?
- What if I need covered treatments that aren't available from a provider in the plan's network?
